Loan Watch: Mellor Helps Leek To Victory

Young Alex midfielder Kelvin Mellor helped Leek Town to a 2-1 victory over Newcastle Town this evening.

Leek boss Neil Cox, the former Alex captain, named Mellor as a striker for the game despite the 20 year old usually plying his trade in midfield, after Dario converted him from a defender!

However, the decision proved to be a match winner for Cox, who has struggled to keep Leek out of a relegation battle in the Evo-Stik Division One this season.

After racing into a 1-0 lead on 14 minutes, Leek doubled their advantage just before half time with Mellor providing the killer cross. Although Newcastle pulled one back five minutes before full time it turned out to be a welcome three points for 19th placed Leek against 4th placed Newcastle.

Neil Cox, meanwhile, made his Leek playing debut at the age of 39 in what must be his first notable appearance since retiring as an Alex player back in 2008. Coming on with 10 minutes on the clock he wasted no time in getting involved, picking a yellow card within 30 seconds!

Current list of Alex players out on loan:

Harry Davis - Curzon Ashton till 31st March 2011
Kelvin Mellor - Leek Town till 7th March 2011
Luke George - Newcastle Town (Work experience)
Jason Oswell - Market Drayton (Work experience)
Andy White - Newcastle Town (Work experience)
Jordan Connerton - Nantwich Town till 20th March 2011
