Billy Jones arrived from Exeter City in June 2007 for a fee of £65,000. The left back makes his return to league football following a couple of years out in the Conference with Exeter City.
Billy started his career at Leyton Orient where he made 68 appearances but in 2005 was released by the London club. After spending 4 months at Kidderminster, at the end of the 04-05 season, Billy signed for Exeter City.
Jones made the desired impact at Exeter in over 80 games, playing alongside right back Danny Woodards.
Billy was spotted whilst the Alex watched Danny Woodards at Exeter and 4 months after 'Woody' arrived, Billy signed in a deal worth over £65,000.
It wasn't long before Jones, like Woodards, was a mainstay of the Alex defence. He made 22 appearances in his first season in 07-08, only cut short by a knee injury that saw him miss the rest of the season from Boxing Day onwards.
In 2008/2009 Jones enjoyed a much more productive season. He scored his first Alex goal early on in the campaign against Macclesfield Town in the Football League Trophy.
The departure of Steve Holland and arrival or Gudjon Thordarson in January 2009 saw somewhat of a resurgence for Billy. An occasional captain, Jones played a major part in the Alex's attempt to do the impossible and avoid relegation to League Two. Scoring six goals from left back in his final 15 games of the season, Billy for a short time became one of our most lethal assets - but ultimately relegation to League Two came.
After gaining the support of Gudjon Thordarson Billy was named club captain ahead of the 2009-2010 season and started the season ever present at the back for the Alex. Goals against Grimsby and Hereford saw him continue his goal scoring form but he was helpless as the team tumbled to the wrong end of the league.
After a succession of poor results Gudjon was sacked following the home game against Bury - a 3-2 defeat where Jones picked up his third red card as an Alex player.
With Dario Gradi moving in to replace Gudjon, Jones was replaced as captain by Mat Mitchel-King with Dario revealing that Billy had made clear his intentions to leave the club in summer 2010.
Jones has made just one other appearance this season, coming off the bench for the final 10 minutes of the 2-1 defeat to Port Vale in October.
In January 2010 Dagenham and Redbridge expressed an interest to sign Jones but were ultimately priced out by Crewe.
Jones left the club in summer 2010 after his contract expired.
