Zola finally signed for Crewe at the end of June after nearly two months of waiting. The Alex paid a fee of £200,000 once a work permit was finally granted on June 27th 2008.

His move from Tranmere was a surprise one and met with plenty of scepticism from Alex fans. An injury ravaged 2008-2009 season didn't help, 5 goals in 32 appearances (incl 20 starts) was poor return as the Alex were relegated to League Two.

However in the space of a summer Calvin went from zero to hero as he started the 09-10 season in superb form, shutting up the boo boys of Gresty Road as his season went on.

His injuries cleared up and by Christmas he had appeared it all but one game and notched up an impressive 13 goals.

His goals were not the only attribute that won fans over; his strength, power and general awkwardness for the opposition meant he had became a massive part of the team set up and for a while gave us our only chance of winning games.

Despite claiming 18 goals for the season in 2009/2010, Zola found himself out in the cold for the 2010/2011 season as Clayton Donaldson and Shaun Miller went on a scoring spree. After months of speculation, Zola left the club in January 2011 when he signed for Burton Albion.
