'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Southend 3 - Crewe 0

Not Good Enough

The 242 die hard Crewe fans who made the trip to Southend could be forgiven for traveling the distance in the belief that the team could only get better from last week's disgraceful 1-4 defeat at home to Bournemouth. However, they were treated to nothing more than an inept attempt at playing football as many fans headed for the exits with nearly 25 minutes of the match to go.

In truth we were never in the match, our best, and only, attempts at goal came from offside positions and the Southed keeper had little to do throughout.

It was all predictable stuff from the side as they just sat back in the hope of delaying the inevitable. After 16 minutes of pressure though the Alex defence finally cracked and from the edge of the area Nick Bailey fired a shot right into the top corner, and from then on Southend's points were never in doubt.

They came close to doubling their lead in the second half a couple of times, their best became a rather embarrassing miss. Williams made a good save as a deflected shot wrong footed him, but his parry was only into the path of a Southend striker. From 4 yards out he just had to tap it in but some how managed to blaze it over the bar.

Crewe did have the ball in the net in the first half when Julien Baudet headed in a Billy Jones free kick, but Baudet was caught a yard or two offside.

The second half was a similar story - only without a single chance for Crewe. Lack of fight, urgency and ability from the team meant a stroll in the park for Southend, and when the second went in on 63 minutes, Crewe fans started heading for the exits.

Whilst some fans left, others stayed and decided to show their anger at the team 'You're not fit to wear the shirt' and 'We want our money back' were just two of the chants directed at the players before fans took a pro-Southend approach.

The third and final goal came from a penalty. The referee pointed to the spot for either the shambolic defender or some Ben Williams lunge at a player, it was hard to see which. Either way, Leon Clarke made no mistake in sticking it away.

The players attempted to show appreciation to the traveling support but they were met by jeers. You left Roots Hall wondering where the next points are going to come from.

Dario said post-match that it is a confidence thing, but it seems clear to everyone else that the problem is deeper than that. The management situation isn't helping, and the tactics are poor. Some players don't even look like they know what they're meant to be doing at times. It's an issue for the directors to sort out, but for some reason they just don't have the balls to do it.

By Sunday afternoon we could be in the relegation zone and looking at the fixtures after recent performances, and 6 games without a win, how the heck are we going to get out of it?

Can you see anything changing? Would not be surprised to be on the way to relegation in May and Dario/Holland still rolling out excuse after excuse.
