Crewe move up the table
Sat 10th Jan 3.00pm
Crewe Alexandra lifted themselves out of the relegation places with an important 3-1 victory over Gillingham, who in turn slide into them.
Nicky Ajose opened their account from the penalty spot after Uche Ikpeazu was fouled inside the area before adding his second ahead of the interval.
Bradley Dack pulled a goal back ten minutes into the second-half but Ikpeazu made it safe with a fine effort with six minutes remaining.
The Railwaymen had won two of their previous three games and were in front when Gavin Hoyte brought down Ikpeazu and Ajose converted from the spot. The visitors believed the ball had already gone out of play during the build-up.
Five minutes later Ajose doubled the lead when forcing in after initially being frustrated by goalkeeper Stuart Nelson.
Jermaine McGlashan should have replied with a shot beyond the far post, but after Nelson had already denied Ajose a hat-trick the Gills found a way back into the contest.
Midfielder Dack supplied the finish to a Cody McDonald cross with home defender Harry Davis at the time off the pitch receiving treatment.
However, Ikpeazu later broke clear and avoided handball claims to seal the victory at the second attempt and move the home side further up the table.
