Double in vain
Sat 8th Mar 3.00pm
Leading marksman Chuks Aneke scored twice but Crewe Alexandra still went down 4-2 to Peterborough United at London Road.
The on loan Arsenal youngster curled the visitors ahead but Britt Assombalonga quickly levelled from the spot and Nicky Ajose then earned their opponents an interval lead.
However, Aneke grabbed his second to equalise after the break, only for Danny Swanson to fire Posh back in front a couple of minutes later. Conor Washington then settled it just before the end.
Manager Steve Davis earlier gave Billy Waters his first senior start and Byron Moore reverted to the bench. On loan Cameron Park was also handed a full debut after Brad Inman was ruled out.
Posh skipper Tommy Rowe proved a threat on a couple of separate occasions while Bobby Olejnik grabbed from Park, who then released Aneke into the area to finish over the keeper and into the far corner.
However, Harry Davis immediately pushed Washington inside the box and Assombalonga equalised from the spot two minutes later.
Good work from Washington then had Ajose shooting directly at Ben Garratt, and the teenage keeper next denied a Shaun Brisley header before Washington and Michael Bostwick were both charged down.
Peterborough went close again when Washington's deflected strike came back off the far post. Mathias Pogba was then blocked off at the other end, until Swanson chased away and sent in ex-Manchester United trainee Ajose for a first-half lead, despite Pogba then hoisting over.
Crewe brought on Moore following the break but it was Park shooting wide after Assombalonga had already threatened with a header. However, Moore and Pogba then combined for Aneke to draw the visitors back level with his second of the afternoon.
It could have been even better as substitute Moore linked with Park and Aneke forced Olejnik into action at his near post. But it was Posh soon back in front when Washington set-up Swanson after holding off the challenge of Davis.
There could have been another as Garratt superbly thwarted Washington before his attempted follow-up struck one of his own grounded colleagues. Mark Ellis next headed a Park free-kick wide at the other end.
The Railwaymen made a couple more changes in an attempt to find an equaliser but it Washington who was to again escape their clutches and finish in style just before the end.
