Crewe fall to foot of table
Thu 26th Dec 3.00pm
Crewe Alexandra slipped to the foot of the table following their 2-0 defeat at title-hopefuls Wolverhampton Wanderers.
On loan Derby County winger Michael Jacobs headed the home side into an early lead from Scott Golbourne's inviting third-minute cross.
But Wolves had to wait until injury-time to ensure maximum points as top scorer Leigh Griffiths registered his thirteenth goal of the season from the edge of the area.
The Alex were without defender Adam Dugdale after requiring a brain scan following his recent carrying off against Shrewsbury Town. Although his condition is described as fine, Mark Ellis was recalled at the back.
However, a quality delivery from Golbourne towards the far post had the visitors immediately chasing the game when Jacobs headed in.
Alex's on loan midfielder Mesca nodded a reply straight at Carl Ikeme, who also gathered a Chuks Aneke header; although the visitors had a real escape when Danny Batth sidefooted against an upright from only five-yards.
Aneke produced a 20-yard shot through to Ikeme at the other end while the recalled Ellis missed a headed opportunity to equalise from Byron Moore's delivery.
Crewe's on loan striker Tom Hitchcock forced another save from Ikeme into the second period before his opposite number Ben Garratt gathered Jake Cassidy's low 25-yard drive.
Wolves substitute Ethan-Ebanks-Landell then chipped over the young keeper and onto the top of the net, while Garratt managed to deny Jacobs before later turning Griffiths' effort against the woodwork.
Harry Davis was wide from a replying free-kick and substitute AJ Leitch-Smith did likewise, until Griffiths worked the opening to finally end any remaining doubt just prior to the end.
