Crewe continue poor run

Crewe Alex

Brunton Park

Tue 26th Nov 7.45pm

Attendance: 2,969

The wait goes on as Crewe Alexandra suffered a fourth straight defeat and eighth game without a victory at Carlisle United.

The Cumbrians scored twice in quick succession through Dave Symington and Matty Robson just ahead of the interval.

Harry Davis managed an injury-time consolation in reply but the visitors remain deep in the relegation zone and four points away from safety.

Crewe pressed early with Vadaine Oliver having a header cleared off the line while Sean O`Hanlon threatened in reply until Davis and new loan goalkeeper Neil Etheridge managed to cover his break.

Max Ehmer then tried his luck from distance for the hosts, until Oliver produced a spectacular overhead finish into the net - but play had already been stopped due to Adam Dugdale suffering a head injury at Davis' free-kick.

AJ Leitch-Smith next hoisted over after swapping passes with Byron Moore but his side were to be rocked by a couple of late first-half goals.

Keeper Etheridge turned over a Lee Miller header and although Mark Ellis initially headed away the corner, it was returned into the net by Symington via a deflection off Sean O`Hanlon.

Moments later Miller released the dangerous Robson to drill past the totally exposed Etheridge and double the lead.

Home midfielder James Berrett went close to another with a 25-yard strike against the crossbar following the interval while Ben Amos turned aside Matt Tootle's reply.

Billy Waters was handed his debut from the bench for the visitors on the hour, although it was Oliver twice forcing Amos into action as his side chased a way back.

However, a slip from Dugdale allowed Miller the opportunity to settle the outcome but the required finish wasn't forthcoming, while on loan George Evans tested Amos during the closing stages.

Carlisle came forward again with Lewis Guy stabbing wide and Robson being thwarted by Etheridge before Davis headed in a stoppage time corner from substitute Michael West, who then threatened an unlikely equaliser as Amos saved again.
