Crewe Alexandra recovered from four successive defeats as on loan Chuks Aneke claimed the only goal of the contest against play-off contenders Sheffield United at Gresty Road.

Arsenal teenager Aneke struck his seventh goal of the season from the edge of the area early in the second-half as the hosts signed-off their home programme with a timely victory.

But it required a number of decent stops from veteran goalkeeper Steve Phillips, most noticeably from Blades substitute Joe Ironside in added time.

He began when turning over an early header from defender Harry Maguire while Jonathan Forte then shot wide after robbing the recalled Kevin Stewart.

The busy Phillips was soon back in action after blocking at the feet of Chris Porter following a firm drive from Callum McFadzean.

The visitors continued to appear dangerous and Phillips denied Kevin McDonald while Aneke saw his 25-yard effort diverted wide by George Long in the opposite goal.

But Blades' young keeper was beaten shortly after the interval when fellow teenager Aneke curled in a superb finish to earn his side the lead.

Back came United and Phillips dealt with a Barry Robson free-kick and then kept out Porter before Forte and his replacement Ironside were both wide of the mark.

An excellent break from goalscorer Aneke witnessed his finish this time drifting behind, while long-range replies from Michael Doyle and Kevin McDonald were similarly unsuccessful - until Phillips came to the rescue again when turning Ironside's shot away in added time.
