Crewe fall to another early strike

Crewe Alexandra lost for the fourth successive game courtesy of a first-minute Joe Edwards goal at promotion hopefuls Yeovil Town. Edwards struck from the edge of the box following James Hayter's lay-off to maintain the visitors' disappointing record since Wembley.

But home goalkeeper Marek Stech later had to keep out decent efforts from Max Clayton, Chuks Aneke and substitute Ryan Colclough as their side pressed for an equaliser.

The Glovers were forced to contend with losing both Byron Webster and Nathan Ralph to injury during the opening half-hour - but their opponents made another slow start as Edwards went past Mark Ellis and found the bottom corner with barely a minute showing on the clock.

The visitors' response was good, however, with Stech helping over an acrobatic effort from Kelvin Mellor before Brad Inman stabbed wide on the end of a fine solo break. Yeovil's Paddy Madden and Hayter were then both wayward while Max Clayton and Matt Tootle called Stech into further action at the other end.

But it was the hosts appearing the more likely as the interval approached with Madden flashing another effort behind and Hayter continuing to appear dangerous, while Clayton dragged wide in reply from the edge of the area.

And opportunities continued to be created at both ends following the break with leading scorer Madden heading at Phillips and Inman having a shot charged down by way of a response.

Home keeper Stech once again came to the rescue as Chuks Aneke went close just ahead of his withdrawal before Alex substitute Nathan Ellington later struck wide from a decent run.

Gavin Williams next provided danger from a free-kick deflected behind for the home side before delivering for Luke Ayling to have a header cleared off the line by the covering Tootle.

Crewe defender Ellis then headed over from a set-piece and Colclough forced another fine save from Czech keeper Stech during added time as the visitors continued to be denied.
