Alex held despite early strike
Sat 16th Mar 3pm
Crewe Alexandra were held by relegation-threatened Shrewsbury Town to a 1-1 draw at Gresty Road. That was despite the boost of a tenth-minute strike from Byron Moore as the visitors levelled through a Luke Summerfield header before the break.
Debutant substitute Nathan Ellington later went close to a winner for the home side with a header against the crossbar after recently signing a deal with them until the end of the season.
The Alex showed just one change from last week with Kelvin Mellor returning at right-back. And they soon forged in front when AJ Leitch-Smith cleverly released Moore to slot inside the post for his fourth goal of the campaign.
Yado Mambo headed over and Jon Taylor struck straight at Steve Phillips as the visitors attempted a response, which arrived just ahead of the half-hour as Marvin Morgan broke for Summerfield to head into the net.
Harry Davis swept a free-kick wide at the other end while Joe Jacobson replied with a shot easily taken by Phillips as the interval was reached with honours still even.
Following the break the hosts threatened again with Leitch-Smith on-the-turn forcing keeper Chris Weale into action before curling another attempt narrowly wide.
Mathias Pogba then cleared the crossbar and Murphy despatched a free-kick at the keeper as the Alex continued to press, while Tom Eaves reacted by making Phillips block with his legs.
But the best chance arrived when substitute Ellington headed Moore's delivery against the woodwork before leading scorer Pogba directed another effort over. Connor Goldson and Taylor also saw late opportunities for the visitors.
