Alex struck by Pitman brace

Crewe Alexandra were again undone by Bournemouth striker Brett Pitman as he followed up his recent hat-trick against them with a double in a 2-1 victory at Gresty Road.

On that first occasion Pitman netted twice from the spot and he had another opportunity when Mathias Pogba was adjudged to have fouled Matt Ritchie just ahead of the hour-mark. Pitman needed to second invitation as he gave the visitors the lead from twelve-yards.

However, Pogba made amends by heading home Kelvin Mellor's cross some twenty minutes later, only for Pitman to snatch a winner with just six minutes remaining and take the Cherries to the top of the table.

Bournemouth keeper Shwan Jalal earlier saved from both Luke Murphy and Mellor and then gathered from Chuks Aneke following nice work between Pogba and Mellor.

Defender Mark Ellis also drilled wide while Harry Arter saw a long-range effort deflected onto the roof of the net at the other end. He also tested goalkeeper Steve Phillips from 25-yards.

Following the break AJ Leitch-Smith called Jalal into further action while Murphy struck the underside of the crossbar with a 20-yard free-kick.

Meanwhile, Arber proceeded to find an upright in reply and then Pitman fired home from the spot after Pogba was penalised following a challenge inside his own area.

Arber soon delivered another effort wide while Phillips saved well from Lewis Grabban before Pogba headed an equaliser after Ellis had smartly released Mellor.

But Pitman was on hand to finish into the bottom corner when being allowed too much space with six minutes remaining - the fifth time he had found the net against the Alex this season.
