Narrow defeat ends run

Crewe Alexandra's recent three-match winning run was ended by Luke Summerfield's solitary goal as Shrewsbury Town lifted themselves out of the relegation zone at the Greenhous Meadow.

The 24-year-old struck with a close-range header following enterprising work by Marvin Morgan with only a couple of minutes of the opening half remaining.

Manager Steve Davis selected an unchanged starting line-up and his side were put under early pressure by opponents chasing their first win in seven games.

But the visitors gradually began to exert some control and Chuks Aneke struck at Chris Weale from 30-yards before opposite number Alan Martin twice claimed from Morgan and former Alex striker Luke Rodgers also fired wide.

The Alex had shouts for a penalty dismissed when Lauri Dalla Valle appeared to be taken down while looking to get on the end of Aneke's cross. Mark Wright saw an attempt charged down at the other end and Julian Bennett nodded straight at Martin before Morgan delivered perfectly for Summerfield to head the opening goal.

Former Scottish Under-21 international Martin was instantly required at the start of the second-half when blocking well from Morgan and Wright also drove narrowly wide. Mathias Pogba then had a shot charged down in reply before heading Gregor Robertson's cross into the side-netting.

On loan striker Dalla Valle was attempting to score for the third successive game as his effort from the edge of the area was held by Weale before the visitors introduced Max Clayton from the bench. Mark Ellis was next to be denied by Weale while Clayton was marginally wide with an acrobatic effort after Martin had already made another routine stop from Wright.
