Chuks rescues late Alex point

On loan substitute Chuks Aneke grabbed an injury-time equaliser to add to Mark Ellis' second goal in four games as Crewe Alexandra fought back from two-goals down at Walsall.

The Arsenal teenager got on the end of an excellent run from Mathias Pogba to head in a vital leveller after Ellis had earlier converted skipper Luke Murphy's free-kick.

First-half efforts from Jamie Paterson and Florent Cuvelier appeared to leave the home side well in control as the visitors once again found themselves chasing the game early on.

But Crewe managed to get themselves out of trouble and eventually claimed a point courtesy of strikes right at the end of each half.

Home striker Will Grigg saw an early low shot deflected wide as his side pressed during the opening exchanges before Karl Dawson turned a Harry Davis free-kick away from his top corner at the other end.

But Walsall forged ahead after Byron Moore lost possession on twelve minutes and Cuvelier released Patterson to run clear and calmly finish past Alan Martin.

Adam Chambers also fired wide for the hosts while Grigg headed straight at Martin before then crossing for Cuvelier to double the advantage with still less than half-an-hour played.

Davis headed a Murphy corner wide in reply and Martin claimed from goalscorer Paterson until the visitors restored some hope for their followers when Ellis slid home on 44 minutes after Max Clayton touched on Murphy's free-kick.

There was still time remaining in the opening half for Chambers to shoot narrowly wide before Martin blocked well from Grigg after the break and Moore replied straight at Darlow.

Crewe were pressing for an equaliser and Murphy was too high with a volley while Cuveiler dragged another opportunity wide for the Saddlers.

Alex then saw their claims for a penalty ignored following Andy Taylor's challenge on Pogba inside the area before substitute Michael West was next wide of the mark for them.

The visitors were still to be rewarded though in added time as Pogba's break produced an inviting cross for Aneke to head an equaliser into the roof of the net well into added time.
