Crewe Into Relegation Zone
The Alex slip into the bottom four despite a 1-1 draw against Bristol Rovers tonight. It looked business as usual for Crewe as Rovers dominated large areas on play in the first half, and when Ben Williams made a mess of a Chris Lines shot on the stroke of half time it looked to be heading for another Alex defeat.
However, 40 seconds into the second half, Tom Pope popped up with a equaliser, rebounding Nicky Maynard's parried shot. From there on in, Crewe showed a half-decent performance for once and but for great goalkeeping could have been 2-1 or 3-1 up. It wasn't to be Crewe's night though, and that was confirmed when a fantastic shot from Pope in the final seconds of the game smashed against the post after leaving the keeper stranded.
Whilst both Crewe and Rovers will feel unlucky not to have taken three points, a draw will probably suit the neutral. The draw, however, doesn't help Crewe, who enter the relegation zone for the first time this season.
A Millwall win at Cheltenham means the Alex are in there on goal difference, with Millwall and Cheltenham on level points with Crewe. It is however hard to see when we will get out of it if performances all round don't improve. With Brighton, Swansea, Leeds, Carlisle and Orient to come in February, only the best performances will see the Alex pull through this one.
'The Great Escape' rang out of the PA system after tonight's match... Premature? We'll have to wait and see.
