Maynard Steps Up Return

Nicky Maynard has stepped up his return from injury and is back 'kicking balls'.

The 21 year old suffered a leg break and ligament damage just 25 minutes into the first game of the season. He was expected to be out till Christmas but his return date was brought forward to mid-November, and Steve Holland thinks he could even be ahead of that time scale.

Holland told crewealex.net: 'Nicky has been able to step up and do a bit of running and he has also kicked a few balls around, so perhaps we could be saying that he is ahead of schedule at the moment.'

Losing Nicky has proved to be a big blow for the Alex. After scoring 19 goals in his rookie season, all goalscoring hopes were pinned on him following Luke Varney's departure. Since his injury Crewe have failed to find goals in 4 of the opening ten matches this season.
