Fans View - Brighton

We are top of the league! Albeit it on alphabetical order. The victory was soured by the awful injury sustained by talisman striker Nicky Maynard in the first half of the 2-1 victory against Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Winsford born striker went down in agony after chasing down a clearance and it was evident to the crowd of just over 5,000 that the injury was serious. It has since been confirmed that he will be out for at least 3 months after suffering a suspected broken tibia and torn ligaments.

That injury overshadowed the fact that we had just equalised after Brighton had earlier taken the lead through Dean Cox. A well struck penalty from Gary Roberts after the assistant referee had flagged for handball much to the annoyance and fury of the Brighton players.

Crewe won the game thanks to some excellent work by my man of the match Billy Jones. He produced a brilliant cross to the back post and Gary Roberts was on hand to head home the winner.

Despite some late Brighton pressure we held on for all 3pts. Not at our best and plenty of work to do in the forthcoming season but the team put in hard work and desire and in the face of adversity they came good.

On his debut Byron Moore was excellent, Steve Schumacher was just the driving force we missed last season and when he came on Vaughan looked in tip top condition. But as mention above my man of the match was Billy Jones, sound and some superb crosses.

All we need now is a striker to put some of his excellent crosses away. In the light of the awful injury to Nicky Maynard, replacement strikers must surely be on the way. One believed to be Lee Barnard is to put pen to paper on Monday and potential another could be on the cards following Maynard`s untimely injury.
