Crewe Alex News Roundup
As Crewe manager Dario Gradi bows out of the official management, the club finds itself sitting in mid-table of a league which has been particularly strong this year, with Scunthorpe surprising everyone with promotion.
Whilst Dario`s official days of being the head man are over, he takes up a new role looking after the clubs football interests and has put the wheels in motion to make sure we act quickly this season rather than getting caught out.
Straight out of the starting block came the signing of non-league defender Colin Daniel from Unibond-based Eastwood Town. "Junior" Daniel impressed Chief Scout Glyn Chamberlain and Assistant Manager Neil Baker during his performances this season in the Unibound Northern Premier League, and has obviously done enough to secure himself a contract with Crewe. Welcome Junior!
Also on the defender front, Paul Bignot`s future is far from certain with the full-back being linked with a move to Barnet. Dario Gradi has offered Bignot a contract based on him not finding a new club in the next two weeks and it is looking increasingly likely in all honesty that he may continue his career at Gresty Road next season. In a bizarre contract offer, Dario had to actually explain the goings on to the official website:
Officially, we have given Paul a free transfer but we will also make him an offer to stay here. Paul has been very good to us and very loyal.
As a reward for his loyalty we are trying to help Paul and we want to repay him for his service over many years. When he could have gone to Kidderminster, before Christmas, he was prepared to stay here and help us out.
He has two weeks to decide what he wants to do."
Crewe Alex players have left the club already this close season, hot on the heels of the announcement that Rodney Jack will not be staying on for another season, Ritchie Sutton, Adam Warlow and Darren Kempson will all be departing Gresty Road this summer. Vital Crewe would like to wish the 4 players all the best for the future!
In another bizarre move, Crewe have offered a 1 year contract to striker Mat Bailey based around the idea that we are to experiment playing him at centre-half! With Bailey having a bit-part as a striker for the club, coupled with his Peter Crouch like height may see him reverting to centre-back for next season, something I`ve only ever seen Dion Dublin do successfully!
