Crewe boss Dario Gradi is set to reduce the overall size of the first team squad in an attempt to balance the clubs budget.
In past years the big money transfers like Ashton's move have funded the squad size. Big money transfers haven't been an option this year and therefore a reduction in a wage budget may be required.
Gradi told the official Crewe website:
'I've been discussing budgets with the chairman; there may not be as much room to manoeuvre as in the past.
'With the transfer fees we generated I was able to play safe with the numbers over the past two seasons.
'We went with a large squad but we can't afford to do that as much now.'
