Match Report - Crewe Alexandra vs Notts County

Jordan Bowery`s second goal in as many home games sealed a 2-goal victory for Crewe Alexandra against league leaders Notts County, adding to Michael Raynes` first goal for the club, at the Alexandra Stadium last night.

Crewe manager David Artell named an unchanged starting 11 following Saturday`s defeat to Yeovil with Chris Dagnall missing out on the substitutes bench due to injury, his place going to first year pro Josh Lundstram who made the match-day 18 for the first time in the league after being named as an unused substitute for the Newcastle game in the EFL Trophy.

The opening chance of the game came in the 8th minute with George Cooper missing the target from 25 yards before Raynes headed a Cooper corner straight at County keeper Ross Fitzsimons, who was making his first league start for the visitors following an injury to regular goalkeeper Adam Collin on Saturday, in the 13th minute. Crewe continued to pile on the pressure with Cooper having another effort blocked for the edge of the area before Chris Porter forced Fitzsimons into another save from a tight angle.

On the half-hour mark, Porter tried to beat Fitzsimons with a chipped effort which went wide of the goal before former Port Vale left-back Carl Dickinson tested Dave Richards with a free-kick, which the Alex keeper held at the second attempt. Crewe took the lead on the stroke of half-time with Raynes heading the ball in from a tight-angle from a Cooper corner.

After the break, Dickinson curled another free-kick wide of the target before Nottingham Forest loanee Ryan Yates shot wide following a bit of penalty-area pinball. Kevin Nolan made a triple-substitution on the hour with former Premier League strikers Shola Ameobi and Jon Stead coming on with the latter having an effort from outside the area saved by Richards.

Crewe extended their lead mid-way through the second period. Cooper played a good ball through for Bowery who finished well into the bottom corner past Fitzsimons. Ameobi was booked for a very late challenge on Conor Grant which could have seen the veteran striker sent off but referee Robert Jones showed him just a yellow card. Into the final 10 minutes where Ameobi headed a chance wide of the goal before Grant, after good play between himself and Callum Ainley, forced Fitzsimons into a decent save.

Crewe host Accrington Stanley on Saturday in our next league game.
