Match Report - Crewe Alexandra vs Stevenage
A last-gasp Jordan Bowery goal was enough for Crewe Alexandra to gain victory at the Alexandra Stadium against a very physical and cynical Stevenage team yesterday afternoon.
Crewe manager David Artell made four changes to Tuesday nights`s defeat to Oldham in the EFL Trophy with Conor Grant (who was ineligible for Tuesday), Callum Ainley, Eddie Nolan and captain Chris Dagnall all come into the starting 11 with Chris Porter, Sam Stubbs, Brad Walker and Charlie Kirk all dropping down to the bench.
The opening chance of the game came in the opening minute with Dagnall testing Stevenage keeper Joe Fryer with a shot from just outside the penalty area before George Cooper dragged a shot on the edge of the area wide of the far post. The next chance also came for the hosts as Ainley and Dagnall combined to set up Cooper who skied his effort whilst the 2 young Alex midfielders would combine again as Cooper had an effort saved by Fryer.
The best chance of the first half came in the 28th minute as Zoumana Bakayago brought down Matty Godden on the edge of the area (or maybe just outside) with David Richards, making his home league debut, saving the resulting spot-kick which was hit low and down the middle.
Into the second half with Crewe again starting the brighter team with Fryer having to make a smart save from a Dagnall cross before Stevenage`s wide-man Chris Whelpdale took a shot which was deflected onto the roof of the net before Cooper had another wayward shot from outside the area mid-way through the half.
The final 15 minutes of the game saw the most action as substitute Kyle Wootton set up Jonathan Smith who blazed it over the bar from around the penalty spot before Porter headed a Perry Ng cross wide a minute from time. There was still enough time for the Alex to find a winner as Grant`s left-wing cross found the feet of Bowery who shot through the legs of the defender to score his first of the season in the final minute of stoppage time.
Crewe travel to Yeovil Town next Saturday in our next league game.
