Match Preview: Crewe Alexandra vs Carlisle United

Tomorrow we host Carlisle United who sit 18th in the table after 2 wins, 2 draws and 4 defeats in their 8 games. Having lost to Swindon Town on the opening day, they bounced back with successive victories over Fleetwood Town (after extra time) in the League Cup and both Cambridge United and Cheltenham Town in the league. After a narrow defeat to Sunderland in the second round of the cup it`s been largely disappointing for the Cumbrians as a 4-1 defeat at Lincoln was followed up with their only win since league matchday 3 in the EFL Trophy against Morecambe before 4 more games without a win against Mansfield Town (1-1), Accrington Stanley (0-3), Coventry City (0-2) and 1-1 at home to Barnet last weekend.

During the summer, they have made 6 permanent signings with defenders Tom Parkes and yesterday`s arrival Clint Hill signing from Leyton Orient and Rangers respectively, midfielder Kelvin Etuhu arrived from Bury whilst the forward options were strengthened with the arrivals of Hallam Hope (also Bury), Richie Bennett (Barrow) and former Nantwich Town loanee Sam Cosgrove from Wigan Athletic. They have also made 3 loan signings with goalkeepers Shamal George and Jack Bonham and centre-back James Brown, all on loan until January.

Crewe Alexandra Team News:

Midfielder Conor Grant will could make the bench after coming through 45 minutes against Charlton Athletic in the U23 Professional Development game on Monday whilst young defender Ross Woodcock picked up a cruciate ligament injury in the same game. James Jones is back in training but this game comes too early for him whilst George Ray is still a couple of months away from returning.

Carlisle United Team News:/

Midfielder Samir Nabi could make his debut after coming through a reserves game against Morecambe in midweek whilst wide-men Jason Kennedy and Jamie Devitt could also be involved after also playing in that game.

Last Time Out:

Carlisle United 0-2 Crewe Alexandra, 25th March 2017

Last season`s trip to Brunton Park saw the Alex get a vital win to put some breathing room between themselves and the relegation spots. Crewe took the lead on 34 minutes as Callum Cooke volleyed in after playing a 1-2 with George Cooper, the latter finding his teammate with a measured outside of the foot chipped through-ball.
Shaun Miller, who scored in the game between the sides at the Alexandra Stadium earlier in the season against his former club, was shown a straight red card for a two-footed challenge on Ollie Turton whilst the victory margin was widened on the hour-mark as Cooper set-up Jordan Bowery, who couldn`t miss from 2 yards out.

Crewe: Garratt; Turton, Ray ©, Nugent, Bakayago; Jones, Bingham, Cooke; Dagnall (Ainley 90), Bowery (Wintle 84), Cooper

Head-to-Head:

Looking back through the archives, the 2 clubs have met 88 times with Carlisle leading the head-to-head having 38 wins to 36 with 14 draws. The biggest win for Crewe was the 7-1 victory in January 1939 at Gresty Road whilst Carlisle`s biggest win came in January 1934 with a 6-1 win at Brunton Park.
