Match Preview: Exeter City vs Crewe Alexandra

Tomorrow we travel to Exeter City in our longest trip of the season so far. They sit top of the league after 7 games in having won all but one of the league games having played Cambridge, Swindon (their only draw), Lincoln, Cheltenham, Newport, Forest Green and Barnet. In the cups, they lost 2-1 at home to Charlton whilst they lost 3-1 at home to Yeovil in the EFL Trophy.

During the summer, they have made 5 permanent signings with defenders Luke Croll and Dean Moxey arriving from Crystal Palace and Bolton Wanderers respectively, defensive midfielder Hiram Boateng also arriving from Palace whilst their forward line has been boosted by the arrivals of free transfer Ryan Brunt and Jayden Stockley on an undisclosed fee from Aberdeen. 2 defenders have arrived on loan as right-back Kane Wilson and striker Kyle Edwards have both joined from West Brom until the new year.

Crewe Alexandra Team News:

Midfielder Conor Grant hasn`t travelled after being knocked unconscious in the club`s defeat against Grimsby 2 weeks ago. James Jones is back in training but this game comes too early for him whilst George Ray is still a couple of months away from returning.

Exeter City Team News:

Manager Paul Tisdale could name the same starting 11 for the fifth successive game but left-back Moxey could feature from the start whilst the game is probably too early for midfielder Ryan Harley.

Last Time Out:

Exeter City 4-0 Crewe Alexandra, 4th February 2017

Last season`s corresponding fixture saw Exeter batter Crewe Alexandra at St James` Park. They took the lead on 8 minutes as a right-sided free-kick wasn`t cleared by the Alex defence with defender Jordan Moore-Taylor bundling the ball home from 6 yards out before their second came from a quickly-taken throw-in saw a cross come in from the left with David Wheeler heading it home just before the hour-mark.

His second came 10 minutes later when he fired the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the area through the legs of Zoumana Bakayago whilst Alex substitute Charlie Kirk was shown a straight red card 5 minutes from time for a mis-timed challenge underneath the referee`s nose after a mis-control from the young Alex midfielder before Exeter captain Lloyd James curled the ball in from the edge of the D a minute later.

Crewe: Garratt; Turton, Ray © (Bakayago 12), Nugent, Guthrie; Jones, Hollands (Kirk 75), Cooke; Dagnall (Kiwomya 67), Bowery, Cooper

Looking back through the archives, the 2 clubs have met 44 times with both teams having 16 wins a piece with 12 draws. The biggest wins for Crewe were both 4-1, at St James` Park in August 1967 and at the Alexandra Stadium in April 1971 whilst Exeter`s biggest win was the above-mentioned game.
