Match Report - Crewe Alexandra vs Cambridge United
A Jabo Ibehre goal 10 minutes before the break gave Cambridge United the win with Crewe going down to their first defeat at home in the league. After Saturday`s 5-1 thrashing of Chesterfield, manager David Artell kept with an unchanged line-up after midfielder Conor Grant was not cleared for the game so wasn`t involved at all last night.
The opening chance of the game came in the 10th minute with Cambridge winger Jevani Brown making a smart turn before his cross was just ahead of former Alex loanee Uche Ikpeazu who couldn`t quite get on the end of it before Brown`s free-kick a few minutes later going over minutes later.
The next chance came on the half-hour mark as Brown`s shot was saved easily by Ben Garratt in the Alex goal. Cambridge took the lead on 34 minutes as Ikpeazu`s left-footed shot from just inside the area was saved by Garratt, who palmed it straight back into the centre of the goal where Ibehre finished into an empty net. Crewe hit the bar almost straight away as George Cooper`s left-wing cross found Nolan at the back post and his looping header came back off the bar, luck deserting him for the second time this week after his own goal on Saturday.
Into the second half, where Crewe`s top scorer Chris Porter had a header wide of the goal before Perry Ng, fresh from scoring his first senior Football League goal the other day, took the ball towards the edge of the area before firing a shot over the bar on the hour-mark.
Despite quite a lot of pressure in the final 20 minutes, Crewe couldn`t produce a delivery to find an equaliser.
