Crewe Alexandra Pre-Season Friendlies vs Buxton & Kidsgrove

Crewe Alexandra officially started their pre-season last night with 2 away games at Buxton and Kidsgrove Athletic. Both teams were a mixture of senior players as well as young pros and scholars with Phill Roberts (@TwoLPhill) and Chris Jones and Jack Jones (@ChrisLukeJones and @JackJones1532 respectively) providing the updates on twitter that have allowed me to produce this column.

Starting with the game at Buxton, where the Railwaymen took the lead with about 10 minutes of the first half to go with first year professional Lewis Reilly heading home his first goal with the senior team heading home an Oli Finney free-kick. In the second half, Brad Walker scored his first in the club`s colours by finishing from the edge of the area before Reilly should have added his second after hitting the post from close range. He would later add his second of the game firing in after Zoumana Bakayago`s past before the best goal of the game was scored by the hosts, Ant Wilson volleying over Garratt from the edge of the area.

Onto the game at Kidsgrove now where it was all action in the opening period. Crewe opened the scoring on 18 minutes as Harry Pickering`s shot was saved by Athletic keeper Ben Lucas with the ball volleyed home by Charlie Kirk. The young midfielder, playing off Chris Porter, added a second a couple of minutes later by side-footing the ball in from another Pickering cross and completed his hat-trick with a low driven effort from Porter`s assist.

Kidsgrove got a goal back with Lee Cropper heading home a free-kick given away by the trialist right-back (trialist A) before George Cooper restored the 3-goal lead with a low drive from the edge of the area. 2nd year scholar Luke Offord came on for the injured trialist right-back with 10 minutes of the first half remaining whilst the trialist left-back (B) set up Porter for his first goal in Crewe colours before Cropper added his second of the game just before the break getting in behind the defence and finding the top corner.

Into the second half where Porter added another 10 minutes after the break, his shot from the edge of the area taking a deflection past Lucas before Kirk dragged an effort wide of the goal evading Porter and half-time substitute Daniel Udoh. Midway through the half, Tom Lowery added a 7th of the game as Udoh`s saved shot fell to him around the edge of the box where he chipped over Lucas.

Team at Buxton: Garratt; Woodcock, Sass-Davies, Wintle, Bakayago; Ainley, Walker (Griffiths 77), Finney (Lynch 60); Dagnall (c), Reilly, Dale

Team vs Kidsgrove: Richards; Trialist A (Offord 36), Raynes (c), Ng (Harrison 46), Trialist B; Lowery, Lundstram, Pickering, Cooper (Udoh 46); Porter (Hurst 70), Kirk
