Crewe Alexandra only lost out to a last-minute winner in their latest pre-season friendly with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Gresty Road.

Substitute Nouha Dicko seized upon late confusion between Thierry Audel and Scott Shearer to find an empty net.

But the Railwaymen offered a spirited performance against higher-ranked opposition following their midweek defeat to Macclesfield Town.

However, lacking the physical presence of both Mathias Pogba and Vadaine Oliver their early opportunities proved restricted, although Ollie Turton went close before the break and George Ray headed against the crossbar.

Lee Molyneux then shot wide following the interval and Turton was cruelly denied by the woodwork, while the visitors also had chances until their late winner.

Crewe Alexandra: Shearer, Audel, Ray, Dugdale (Baillie 64), Tootle, Turton, Nolan, Atkinson (Molyneux 53), Waters (Cooper 63), Inman (Jones 66), Lancaster (Oliver 46)

Wolverhampton Wanderers: Ikeme, Doherty, Batth, Rickets, Goldbourne, Evans Edwards (Bancessi 63), van La Parra (Henry 63), McDonald, Jacobs, Clarke (Dicko 63)
