Crewe Alexandra shared a second successive pre-season friendly 1-1 draw - this time at Conference Premier outfit Chester.

Manager Steve Davis included a couple of trialists and one of them, Chris Atkinson, gave the visitors the lead just before the half-hour.

Former Scottish international Chris Iwelumo had already missed a glorious chance for their opponents and Jamie Menagh also clipped the crossbar.

But Matt Tootle soon delivered for Atkinson to slot in from ten-yards, although that was cancelled out by John Rooney - brother of England striker Wayne - when his cross-shot beat new keeper Scott Shearer early in the second-half.

Substitute Callum Saunders then had a late opportunity to win if for the Alex but could only find the side-netting.

Crewe Alexandra: Shearer, Tootle (Molyneux 75), Ray (Ng 68), Dugdale, Guthrie, Grant, Atkinson (Nolan 75), Turton, Pogba (Johnston 79), Inman (Waters 68), Lancaster (Saunders 61)

subs (unused): Garratt, Oliver
