Crewe Confirm Full Back Interest

Crewe's Assistant Manager Neil Baker has confirmed the club's interest in left backs Tom Newey and Tom Kennedy. Following Billy Jones' refusal to sign a new contract, the Alex have stepped up their efforts to find a new left back, as they monitor several left backs in League Two. However, the search has been narrowed down to two or three left backs, including Grimsby's Tom Newey and Bury's Tom Kennedy.

Grimsby's Tom Newey turns 24 at the end of the month, and has made 14 appearances for the Mariners. Newey is Grimsby's joint top assistsman with 2 assists, and has scored 5 goals in his 122 career appearances. Newey began his career with Leeds, though he never made an appearance for the Yorkshire outfit. He enjoyed two loan spells at Darlington and Cambridge, before a free transfer to Leyton Orient in 2003. However, he failet to make an impact there, and following another loan spell, joined Cambridge on a free in March 2005. Just three months and 10 appearances later, he joined Grimsby on a free.

Bury's Tom Kennedy is just 21 but has already made 117 appearances for the Shakers. He made his debut as an 18 year old, and was considered one of their brightest young prospects at the time. His progress was hindered by minor injuries last season, but he still managed to finish as the club's joint top goalscorer with 5 goals. He has begun this season well, making 15 appearances, and is the joint 3rd top assistsman in League Two.

Vital Crewe exclusively revealed Crewe's interest in the duo last week.
