Nani double clinches victory

Portuguese international Nani struck twice as a Manchester United XI defeated Crewe Alexandra 2-0 in their pre-season friendly at Gresty Road.

Fellow internationals Nemanja Vidic and Antonio Valencia also lined up against the Railwaymen, along with Italian Under-21 striker Federico Macheda - in front of more than five thousand fans.

But it was Nani crashing in a free-kick for an eleventh-minute lead before adding his second of the game ahead of the hour-mark.

Teenager George Ray headed wide early on for the hosts and Mathias Pogba sidefooted at goalkeeper Sam Johnstone before Matt Tootle was penalised on the edge of his own area. Nani clinically despatched his free-kick into the top corner.

Far more serious for Crewe was their leading scorer from last season, Pogba, then limping out of the action with a knee injury that appears certain to rule him out of the start of the new campaign.

The visitors threatened again through both Scott Wooton and Macheda, while Johnstone was required to save from Max Clayton at the other end.

His opposite number, Alan Martin, was tested by Tom Lawrence following the restart before Alex substitute Lee Molyneux's reply glanced the top of the crossbar on its way over.

However, Nani then received a pass from Valencia and held off the challenge of Thierry Audel before sliding his finish across Martin for his second goal of the evening.

Goalkeeper Martin later gathered a 25-yard effort from United substitute Bebe while Macheda also shot wide of the mark.
