A solitary goal from former Crewe Alexandra youngster Grant Hanley earned Blackburn Rovers a narrow 1-0 victory at Gresty Road.

The 21-year-old Scot headed in Jordan Rhodes' tenth-minute corner to eventually separate the sides in the Alex's opening home pre-season friendly.

Mathias Pogba had already shot wide and Ryan Colclough did likewise on the end of a good run before goalkeeper Jake Kean was forced to turn aside Byron Moore's twenty-yard effort.

Blackburn's Alan Judge went close at the other end while Steve Phillips needed to block from Ruben Rochina.

His replacement Alan Martin then twice denied the dangerous Rhodes after the break before Crewe skipper Abdul Osman sent a close-range header over from Colclough's cross.

Rovers keeper Kean also did well to counter the threat of Max Clayton from another inviting Moore delivery as the home side continued to press for an equaliser.
