Baker contemplates Wembley effect

Assistant boss Neil Baker admits their Wembley triumph last season could realistically have cost Crewe Alexandra a place in the play-offs.

"I maintain we might have gone closer if we hadn't won the JP Trophy" - Neil Baker
While Baker naturally states that he would never change the experience, he does believe the occasion and the exceptionally challenging fixture list immediately following it was key to his side losing their next four games.

After gloriously accounting for Southend United by a 2-0 margin in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final at Wembley in early April, the Alex then succumbed to high-flying quartet Brentford, Doncaster Rovers, Swindon Town and Yeovil Town; until rallying and defeating Sheffield United and Walsall in their last couple of games.

"I maintain we might have gone closer if we hadn't won the JP Trophy," Baker admitted to Crewe's official website. "I wouldn't swap the day or the trophy because it was fantastic for everyone. But it would have been interesting to see because there was definitely a backlash after the final. Who knows how we would have done but I felt we could have got closer."
