Alex still punching high

Crewe Alexandra goalkeeper Steve Phillips says the club's talented youngsters will still help it punch above it own fighting weight next season.

"What we have achieved over the past 18 months is nothing short of tremendous" - Steve Phillips
Despite having one of the smallest budgets the Alex still finished in mid-table following their return to the third tier last season. And this time around they will once again be rubbing shoulders with such established names as Sheffield United and Coventry City, as well as newly-relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers.

"It's going to be as tough a division as it has ever been next season with clubs in it with the spending power of Wolves and Sheffield United," Phillips admitted to This is Staffordshire. "Our budget is one of the lowest in there, and that is why what we have achieved over the past 18 months is nothing short of tremendous.

"But what we do have in our favour is the academy. We've got some very good players coming through," he added. "We can't afford to stop pushing forward though, because if you get off to a tricky start in this division things can get very difficult."
