Delighted Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis was understandably throwing rich plaudits around after last night's super show at Coventry City.

"It was a great team performance and we have a positive result to take into the second leg" - Steve Davis
The Alex gloriously moved within ninety minutes of a Wembley return with a 3-0 first-leg victory in their Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern Area final in front of a bumper 30,000-plus crowd at the Ricoh Arena.

On loan Brad Inman struck twice during the second-half and returning striker AJ Leitch-Smith added a late third. But the visitors were also grateful to the quality of veteran goalkeeper Steve Phillips and his valiant defence.

"I thought Steve Phillips was excellent. He was magnificent and kept us in it with some outstanding saves," Davis told the Crewe Chronicle. "We have scored three exceptional goals. The front four were excellent in the second half.

"Brad's second goal was exceptional. He just kept going and has passed it into the net," he continued. "AJ has that real quality as well and when he turned inside I knew he would score because he does that in training all the time.

"We had other chances as well," Davis added. "It was a great team performance from us and we have a positive result to take into the second leg."
