Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis was on hand last evening to collect on behalf of his former starlet after Nick Powell took the North West Football League Two player award for last season.

"Nick was fantastic for us, he helped us to promotion, scored that outstanding goal at Wembley and then got his move" - Steve Davis
Davis, who was actually amongst the nominees for the manager of the year title eventually won by Manchester City's Roberto Mancini, was asked to pick up the trophy for Powell on the strength of his achievements with the Alex last term. Powell is currently away with the England Under-21 squad after completing a big-money move to Manchester United over the summer.

"Nick deserved the award and his rise has been remarkable in a short space of time," Davis told Crewe's official website. "He really made his name in six months and that is an example to all young players because if you have confidence in your ability, you can go as far as you want.

"Nick was fantastic for us, he helped us to promotion, scored that outstanding goal at Wembley and then got his move to one of the greatest clubs in the world," he added. "He deserves all the accolades."
