Losing AJ is a blow - Davis

Losing the services of striker AJ Leitch-Smith with ankle ligament damage is a real blow for Crewe Alexandra, according to their manager Steve Davis.

"I think he's been one of our most dangerous forwards since the start of the season" - Steve Davis
The 22-year-old marksman was on the end of a heavy challenge from Portsmouth's Brian Howard last week, which has been sufficient to since rule him out of action for at least a month.

"It is a blow, but AJ will be determined to get back into the team and score some goals" Davis told the Crewe Guardian. "I think he's been one of our most dangerous forwards since the start of the season."

Winger Byron Moore is though available again after recovering from a bruised foot and thus offers another attacking option alongside the likes of Mathias Pogba, Max Clayton and on loan Chuks Aneke.

Meanwhile, Davis is set to extend the current deal of goalkeeper Alan Martin, who signed only a six-month contract during the summer.

Former Scottish Under-21 international Martin has played in every game so far this season but now faces real competition for his place following the return of regular keeper Steve Phillips from recent knee surgery.

"I've spoken to Alan and let him know we're keen for him to stay," added Davis. "He's done extremely well and deserves his place."

Preview: Crewe vs Bolton XI

Well if this isn't a bit weird: I'm writing a preview for a Bolton match for Vital Crewe, having edited Vital Bolton for 18 months.

Anyway, I'm back and I'd like to start off by thanking Ross for his sterling work in the last few weeks while I've been away. He's run the site on his own and I think he's done a great job. Or at least I say he has...

Disappointingly, Bolton will not be bringing their first team as promised as they've opted to switch their reserve and first team fixtur
