Davis rues slow start

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis admitted his side didn't start well enough following their 2-0 defeat at Portsmouth.

"I sent them out to restore a bit of pride, and that is what they did" - Steve Davis
On loan striker Wes Thomas and Izale McLeod from the penalty spot put the home side firmly in charge inside the opening quarter of the game.

The visitors certainly improved after the break but had already given themselves far too much to do, although Davis continued to be baffled by a number of strange decisions from the officials.

"I didn't feel it was a penalty," Davis told Crewe's official website. "Andy stuck his foot out, but didn't make any contact, and that was one of many decisions that the officials got wrong for both teams.

"The lads came out and did better in the second half," he added. "I sent them out to restore a bit of pride, and that is what they did without really creating any clear cut opportunities to rescue something from the game."

Alex's defeat sees them slipping three places and down to eighteenth in the table ahead of visiting Walsall next week.
