Striker on the spot for penalty miss

Striker Mathias Pogba might not be quite as keen to take another penalty after missing from the spot against Hartlepool United at the weekend.

The former Wrexham marksman snatched the ball from a colleague with his side trailing 1-0 at the time and spurned the opportunity to equalise when blazing his spot-kick over the bar. Fortunately Chuks Aneke and Mark Ellis later turned the contest back in favour of the home side.

It has since emerged that 22-year-old Pogba was involved in a similar incident last season when contesting another penalty with then Wrexham team-mate Jake Speight, who eventually reclaimed possession of the ball and tucked it in from twelve-yards for the winner against Ebbsfleet United.

"We'd been practising them, Murph, Harry, AJ and Pogs," Crewe manager Steve Davis explained to BBC Stoke. "And I'd have been happy for any of the other three to take them rather than the one that did. Pogs' all went over the bar, so I was shouting on for Harry to take it as his record's good.

"But Pogs had already got to the spot with the ball in his hand and was reluctant to swap at that point. He'd already focused his mind on taking it and he'd got the ball," he continued. "I thought 'as long as he scores I'm not going to say much'. But I couldn't wait to get him into the dressing room at half-time and tell him what I thought. We've all learned a lesson from it."
