Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis is calling for his side to protect the ball better following their midweek home defeat to Oldham Athletic.

"The forward players didn`t retain possession well enough" - Steve Davis
The Alex chief is concerned at his defence being far too overworked by the failure of those further up the pitch to keep possession.

Only a number of five saves from goalkeeper Alan Martin prevented the hosts from suffering a bigger defeat as their lowly visitors eventually ran-out 2-0 winners.

"We were under constant pressure, especially in the first half because we struggled to get hold of the ball up the pitch," Davis told Crewe's official website. "The forward players didn't retain possession well enough and that is something we will need to improve upon."

Crewe host another of the early strugglers at the weekend when Hartlepool United come to Gresty Road.
