Davis challenges younger element

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis is unhappy that more youth players haven't stepped up to the mark over recent months.

"We should have players proving to me they are ready to step in" - Steve Davis
Davis has been forced into recent moves in the loan market for Manchester City forward Harry Bunn and Arsenal midfield prospect Chuks Aneke.

But a serious knee injury to Bunn has once again left him rather short of options, particularly with striker Mathias Pogba currently sidelined and skipper Ashley Westwood recently on his way to Aston Villa.

That prompted Davis to consider using the loan market again while also reminding the younger element at the club of exactly what was expected of them.

"Neil Baker got the players not in the first team together and gave them a kick up the backside," Davis told This is Staffordshire. "They've been reminded that when we have a few injuries we shouldn't be looking outside of the club to bring in a replacement.

"We should have players proving to me they are ready to step in, but I don't think any of them are ready at this stage," he added. "It was a challenge for them more than anything. I want them to give it a good go and increase the competition in the first-team squad."
