Davis still hopes to have him available for the weekend game with Tranmere Rovers after a verbal agreement with national boss Noel Blake that he was to have a maximum of forty-five minutes of action. Blake saw the eighteen-year-old on target for Crewe in the 1-0 win against Coventry City at the weekend.
"We wouldn't stop him playing for England," Davis told This is Staffordshire. "He is an ambassador for us and the club and it is great to have that connection. But I have said to Noel that I am keen for him to be involved in tournaments and the games that count, as opposed to just friendlies."
The Alex are already without injured striker Mathias Pogba and will be keen for Clayton to come through unscathed as they prepare to face the early League One pacesetters on Saturday.
