Manager Steve Davis views the return to action of Kelvin Mellor as a major boost for Crewe Alexandra.

"He was excellent at West Ham on Tuesday and then again on Saturday" - Steve Davis
The 21-year-old who recently turned down a move to Derby County made his first start of the season for the weekend 1-0 victory against Coventry City.

Mellor had been recovering from ankle surgery over the summer and his recall allowed Harry Davis to move across and into the middle of defence.

That certainly offers increased competition at the back for the Alex, particularly with Matt Tootle also recovered from a groin injury.

"Kelvin hasn't been ready because he missed the pre-season and wasn't match fit," Davis told This is Staffordshire. "It was my intention to bring in back in at right-back when he was fit. He was excellent at West Ham on Tuesday and then again on Saturday, so that has been a real bonus."
