Steve Davis said he appointed Luke Murphy as skipper to give him added responsibilty following the departure of his midfield colleague Ashley Westwood to Aston Villa.

"I just threw him the armband and said you are captain today" - Steve Davis
Murphy was named captain for the weekend 1-0 triumph against Coventry City as the hosts returned to their winning ways following a couple of defeats.

Davis had also considered the claims of Byron Moore and Gregor Robertson but decided that both were by nature rather quiet.

"I didn't have that much choice because we are a young team. Murph has a lot of experience and has played a lot of games," Davis told Crewe's official website. "I didn't say anything to him beforehand, I just threw him the armband and said you are captain today. He took the job on and full credit to him. Now we want him to see him maintain that."
