Davis pleased as Alex tough it out

Steve Davis was pleased with the character shown as Crewe Alexandra completed a hard-earned 2-1 victory at Scunthorpe United.

"He has only signed today, joined up with us on the bus and doesn't know anyone but he settled into it quickly" - Steve Davis
The Alex responded particularly well following the disappointment of their opening day defeat to claim a welcome first league win of the season in a tough encounter at Glanford Park.

The visitors took an instant lead with a great finish from AJ Leitch-Smith and after the hosts had soon equalised, Crewe's debutant substitute Harry Bunn later helped set up a winner for the recalled Luke Murphy seventeen minutes from time.

"It was a tough game for us tonight but I was pleased with the way players responded after Saturday's defeat to Notts County," Davis told Crewe's official website. "We found it hard going in the first half. It was a tough night but the players dug in and got us the result.

"We made a great start through AJ and he is capable of scoring goals like that," he added. "The two substitutes had an impact and full credit to Harry. He has only signed today, joined up with us on the bus and doesn't know anyone but he settled into it quickly and showed a sublime piece of skill to help create the winning goal."

Crewe's opening win should certainly leave them in excellent heart ahead of a couple of testing dates in the capital against Brentford at the weekend and then West Ham United in the Capital One Cup the following Tuesday evening.
