Former Crewe Alexandra skipper David Artell has signed for Northampton Town after his proposed move to Port Vale collapsed.

"We've got a player who has been promoted three times, he's a senior figure and he knows league two inside out" - Aidy Boothroyd
The 31-year-old centre-back agreed a two-year deal at the Sixfields Stadium and goes straight into the squad to face Championship visitors Cardiff City in the Capital One Cup tomorrow night.

Artell guided the Alex to a Wembley promotion via the play-offs last season before surprisingly not being offered new terms.

"We've got a player who has been promoted three times, he's a senior figure and he knows league two inside out," Cobblers manager.
Aidy Boothroyd told the Northampton Chronicle & Echo. "I tried to bring him in earlier in the season and I got knocked back. You then start going through your list of players and sometimes you get lucky, like we have here.

"Port Vale's loss is unfortunate, but it's our gain," he added.
