Crewe Alexandra have signed former Chesterfield left-back Gregor Robertson on a two-year deal.

The 28-year-old was released by the Spireites at the end of last season and was apparently recommended to join Alex by former Crewe loanee Jamie Lowry, who has also been linked with a return to Gresty Road.

"He said it was a great club, a great place to be and to play football," Robertson told BBC Radio Stoke. "He was full of praise and I think he is desperate to come as well.

"I was keen to stay in League One," continued the ex-Scottish Under-21 international. "The facilities were fantastic, and I spoke to people I know who were here last season and they were full of praise for the management staff. There was the ability of the team as well, they were all big factors for me."

Robertson originally began his career with 36 appearances for Nottingham Forest before later spells at Rotherham United and Chesterfield.

The Scot will therefore link up with fellow new defender and ex-Torquay United centre-back Mark Ellis when the squad return to training on Thursday.
