Alex step up defensive pursuit

Crewe Alexandra are set to step up their interest in Torquay United centre-back Mark Ellis.

Ellis, 23, a former trainee at Bolton Wanderers, is still to sign a new two-year deal offered back in January at Plainmoor.

That offer is expected to be withdrawn this week with Ellis understood to be wanting to move back north. As he is under the age of 24, Torquay would be entitled to compensation if he leaves.

Plymouth-born Ellis is seen as a natural replacement for the released David Artell at Gresty Road, with his aerial strength a major feature while making 40 appearances and scoring three times for the Gulls last season.
