'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Vaughan Star In The Making

The 22 year old was in impressive form for Wales last night as he challenged Ryan Giggs for the title 'Man of the Match'. Injuries have somewhat plagued his international development as he won only 7 under-21 caps in four years, but thankfully that hasn't stopped Toshack from blooding him in the full side.

'I was a bit intimidated when I first got into the squad, I'm a quiet lad and there's so many big names around. I was pleased with the chance and you get on with it and try to impress.

I was told to play in a forward midfield position just off John Hartson. In fact, it's pretty much how I play for Crewe on the left, getting forward and looking for the ball and chances.

But it's a bit daunting being told you have to get up alongside big John and to have Ryan (Giggs) and Simon (Davies) alongside you. But it went well, and it was my best game for Wales at any level.

John [Toshack]'s thrown a few of the youngsters in and asked them to sink or swim, but it is just good to be given that opportunity, then it's up to the individual.

I know I can play consistently like that on a week-to-week basis, and when I do it will see me go from strength to strength.'

Toshack commented:

'I don't like singling out players, but David was outstanding. He is a very skilful player and can work well in tight situations.

There is only one thing worse than giving the ball away and that is not going looking for it, and you can never accuse David of that.

I was delighted with him.'
