Steve Davis Appointed First Team Manager

Steve Davis has been named Crewe Alexandra Manager after Dario Gradi decided to return to his role as Director of Football today

Davis takes over with immediate effect and will have Neil Baker as his assistant manager.

The news comes after a poor couple of weeks both on the pitch and off it. As the Alex crashed to 3-1 and 3-0 defeats at Aldershot and Torquay respectively, a section of fans turned on the legendary manager.

Despite telling fans that they won't be forcing him out of the job on Saturday evening, Dario allowed Steve Davis to take the team for the Oldham JPT match on Tuesday night. It seems they were the first steps in Davis' appointment.

Dario has now returned to his role as Board Director and Director of Football, a role he took up during Steve Holland's and Gudjon Thordarson's reigns. The club issued statement says that Dario will focus on ensuring the academy's future ahead of the proposed EPPP changes.

Davis takes on the role after two years as assistant manager, a role he had both under Gudjon Thordarson and Dario Gradi. In that time he took the team on a couple of occasions in Dario's absence, most notably in the 8-1 home win over Cheltenham last season.

The former centre back has a long Alex history, having started his career at the club with over 145 appearances for the club during Dario's first 4 years as manager back in the mid-1980's. This season has also seen his son Harry become a key figure in the Alex starting 11.

Davis however learnt much of his management trade at local side Nantwich Town, where he took the Dabbers to two promotions in three years & a FA Vase victory.
