We weren't particularly expecting anything to happen and good old Crewe Alex have delivered [nothing] this transfer deadline day.
We started the pre-season with funds to bring players in and a list of targets but as we enter September the only new face in at Gresty Road this summer has been in the shape of back-up goalkeeper Alan Martin.
It does nothing to quell rumours of the club's financial position, we've seen plenty of positive talk coming from the club but it's always been followed up by back tracking. Even Dario's harshest critics would admit it's unlikely the maestro is entirely happy with his squad, 90% of whom have been blooded from the academy, and given a penny or two would strengthen.
New defenders were - and still are - absolutely necessary whilst the attack is far from ideal in terms of depth. It all seems so long ago however that we were hours from sealing a deal for Gareth Owen and talking of moves for Tyrone Barnett of Macc or Jamie Vardy of Halifax. Pie in the sky with hindsight!
The most recent of 'targets' has seen trialist Richard Hinds snubbed for the time being, with Dario only will to offer the former Sheff Weds defender a non-contract deal after tonight if he doesn't find himself a club beforehand. Well it seems Hinds hasn't signed up elsewhere, but I wouldn't pin any hopes on that one.
Dario is also reported to have also spoken to Arsenal's Reserve captain Daniel Boateng about a loan move but that looks like it can be discarded with the rest of the Alex rumours this summer after Arsenal pulled the plug on a deal that would have seen Boateng join Swindon this week.
On the plus side, rumours of an exit for Shaun Miller never came to fruition despite some insisting Miller was certain to leave the club before the end of the transfer window.
So, pulling out the old cliche....it looks like we will be going with what we've got.
The question is, will the club be coming clean as to why the last few months have been such a let down?
