Dario Wants Big Plan B

Dario Wants Big Plan B

Dario says he is looking for a 'big man' for up front but is otherwise happy with 'what we've got' in terms of strikers.

The club were expected to add two new strikers to the ranks this summer, with a host of names mentioned including Accrington's Terry Gornell and Halifax's Jamie Vardy, but the u-turn from Byron Moore this week to sign a new 12 month deal seems to have quelled the club's need for a revamped attack.

Dario now says that Ajay Leitch-Smith is likely to be given a chance up front to replace the departed Clayton Donaldson having made a name for himself as a 'super sub' in the last 12 months.

Ajay and Miller leading the attack will provide a [lack of] height problem and Dario says that he will be searching for a 'plan B' in a player with height. He told The Crewe Chronicle:

'The search is for a bigger man up there - not necessarily a target man because I don`t want someone who can`t move about - but a bigger guy to give us a plan B is what we want. Otherwise we`re OK with what we`ve got."

Previous targets in Tyrone Barnett of Macclesfield and Terry Gornell of Accrington, both of whom would have fit the bill, have already been snapped up by the wealthier Crawley and Shrewsbury respectively this summer.

The club however remain interested in former trialist Astley Mulholland from Flixton but face competition from Stockport and their new found fortune. A move for Jamie Vardy however looks unlikely with the Halifax striker more of a short, nippy, winger type.

Crewe Alexandra managed to give supporters a long-awaited victory in their final home game of the season against Doncaster Rovers.

Davis happy with finale

Manager Steve Davis was happy and doubtless very relieved to witness Crewe Alexandra complete their home programme with a 3-1 victory against Doncaster Rovers.

Crewe recover for victory

Crewe Alexandra came from behind for a first win in sixteen games and to drag Doncaster Rovers down into League Two with them for next season.

Kick-off was delayed by half-an-hour due to a waterlogged playing surface and Tommy Rowe gave the visitors the lead through a deflected strike.

However, youngster Callum Ainley equalised with his first senior goal before the break and Marcus Haber and substitute Brad Inman added second-half efforts.
